The greenhouse is a facility built in 2002. In order
to serve the University community the Botany-Microbiology Department
has specified an operations policy, which is designed to keep the greenhouse
organized and its users safe.
Orientation
*All first time users of the greenhouse facility are required to schedule
an orientation session with the greenhouse manager. This session will
introduce the user to the facility.
Greenhouse Users Responsibilities
*Carry out all experimental treatments and make all experimental measurements.
*Clean during and at the end of your project. (i.e. compost plant material,
clean bench tops, sweep up large amounts of debris)
Disposal of plant material
Soil and plant material are to be placed in compost containers separately
from other trash. These containers are located in the greenhouse corridor.
Disease and insect prevention
Use clean containers and tools. All pots, flats, tools, etc. are to
be washed and chemically sterilized (bleach or equivalent) before use
in greenhouse projects. A request for large quantities of supplies must
be pre-approved. Any special chemical/ pesticide/ biological use must
also be pre-approved. The disposal of these items must be coordinated
with the campus chemical hygiene officer.
Used pots and flats etc. are to be placed on the counter beside the
sink. These items are not to be re-used until they have been washed and
sterilized.
Wash your hands before working with plants. This is especially important
when working with propagation materials (seed, seedlings, and planting
media) or if you use or handle any tobacco products. Tobacco use is strictly
prohibited in all areas of the greenhouse.
Keep new soil clean of contaminants by using only the scoops that are
labeled for each bin. Do not put these scoops on the floor. Never re-use
spilled soil including that which accumulates on the floor during potting.
*Do not leave hose ends on the floor. This is a primary source for water-borne
contaminates.
Space Allocation
A greenhouse project
request form is to be filled out and
returned to the Greenhouse office at least one week before project
space is needed. These forms are located in the headhouse and Botany
Laboratory classrooms. The completed form will be reviewed by greenhouse
manager for space allotment and possible conflicts with other projects.
Space will only be given for the specific time period required by the
project. Space will not be allocated for an indefinite period.
*Priority will be given to class experiments, student independent research,
and faculty research in the Botany-Microbiology department. All additional
requests may be subject to a space and resource fee.
Any delays or possible delays in the completion of a greenhouse project
are to be discussed immediately with the greenhouse manager.
Equipment
Please report any broken or malfunctioning equipment to the greenhouse
manager as soon as possible.
Greenhouse tools and equipment are to be signed out and back in for
classroom use. Sign out clip board is located on the tool rack in the
head house.
Public Use
Visitors are welcome in the greenhouse collection
rooms. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 – 4:00 when school is in
session. Group visits of eight or more need to be pre-arranged. A one-week
advance notice is requested. Contact Barb Wiehe at 368-3504 or bjwiehe@owu.edu.
Some areas may not be open due to classroom and research use.
